There has been a lot on the internet about a herb called Aristolochia, used in Taiwan and implicated in causing kidney cancer. There is no cause for alarm in the UK, as this herb was identified as potentially harmful some 13 years ago and banned here at that time. Consequently it was banned in Europe some ten years ago. Anyone who wants to use herbal medicines safely, especially if they are medicines or suffering from medical conditions, or preganant, should consult a qualified herbalist for advice. One way of finding a qualified medical herbalist is to consult the National Institute of Medical Herbalists website www.nimh.org.uk or the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy www.phytotherapists.org Both of these organisations admit only properly qualified herbalists as members and maintain high professional standards for herbalists.
